Status: Active. Creator of Sophia robot. Hardware partner for social robotics applications of Hyperon. Awakening Health JV operational.

Hanson Robotics is the robotics company behind Sophia, the world's most recognized humanoid robot and a signature demonstration platform for Hyperon's cognitive architecture. Founded by Dr. David Hanson, the company develops expressive humanoid robots with lifelike faces, combining proprietary hardware (Frubber skin, facial servos, vision systems) with SingularityNET's AI software stack.

Hyperon Connection

  • Sophia: The original demonstration platform for OpenCog's cognitive architecture. Sophia's mind has historically used OpenCog components for dialogue, emotion, and social interaction. SophiaDAO provides blockchain-based governance for Sophia's personality and behavior evolution.
  • Grace: Sophia's younger sister, a humanoid robot for eldercare and healthcare, built through Awakening Health — a joint venture between Hanson Robotics and Singularity Studio (SingularityNET spinoff). Grace uses the OpenCog proto-AGI architecture and is designed for deployment on the SingularityNET platform.
  • loving-ai: Historical research project exploring Sophia-based compassionate dialogue systems, with legacy code in the Hyperon reference collection.

Historical Significance

Hanson Robotics provided the original embodied AI testbed that motivated much of OpenCog's social robotics work, including the Eva/GHOST chatbot system, ROS bridge integration, and behavior scripting frameworks. This lineage directly informs Hyperon's approach to embodied cognition within the PRIMUS architecture.
